Dr. Geanine Pierro was awarded a PhD from Fordham University in
Developmental Language and Literacy Education in 2009. She received
a Masters Degree in Reading Instruction from Adelphi University and an
Advanced Graduate Certificate in School District Administration from the
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Her Bachelors degree from
Hofstra University included a dual major in Elementary Education and
Developmental Psychology.
Dr. Pierro holds NY State certifications in Reading/Literacy
education, elementary education (Common Branch) and School District
Administration. She was also awarded National Board Certification in
Teaching English as a New Language (ENL) in 2014.
Dr. Pierro was trained in the diagnostic/prescriptive approach to teaching literacy during her residency at Fordham University. Dr Pierro’s education also included training in the “Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop” method of teaching literacy at Columbia University’s Teachers College. She is currently researching the use of Fountas and Pinnell reading levels to provide diagnostic prescriptive instruction for struggling readers.
Dr. Pierro has had a range of experiences in education during the past
18 years. She is currently a Literacy and ESL specialist in a public
school in Brooklyn NY. She is also an adjunct Associate Professor of
Literacy and Early Childhood Education at Hunter College. Dr. Pierro
has been an Assistant Principal, a Literacy Coach, a Lead Reading
Specialist, a classroom teacher of grades 1-4 and a private tutor. She has had
extensive experience with Leveled Literacy Intervention, Guided
Reading and using explicit instruction in a Writer’s Workshop setting.
Dr. Pierro is available for private tutoring in the New York City Area.
She assesses each student’s needs and draws from her vast knowledge of curricular methods in order provide specifically tailored individualized reading and writing instruction. It’s never too early to get the right start! Dr. Pierro works with students ages 4 and up.
